Some places are hard to wire. A fenced storage yard, a large parking lot, a farm outbuilding, or a pole far from the building may be too far or too costly to reach with network cable. A point-to-multipoint (PtMP) wireless link is one way to connect cameras there.
How it works
- The hub: a Ubiquiti Rocket Prism radio paired with an omnidirectional antenna sits at a central, high location. It covers 360 degrees.
- At each camera: a Ubiquiti NanoStation M5 (NSM5) radio points back at the hub, and the camera plugs into it.
- Back at the building: the hub connects to your network and your UniFi Protect recorder, so video records to your own equipment.
One hub can serve several camera locations around the property, so you do not need a separate link for each camera.
What it takes to work well
- Line of sight: radios need a clear path between them. Buildings, containers, and trees can block it.
- Mounting height: the hub is usually mounted high, and cameras go on poles, light poles, or buildings.
- Power: cameras and radios use PoE (power over Ethernet), and weatherproof enclosures protect the equipment.
Why we survey first
Distance, terrain, and obstructions decide what will work, so we look at your site before we promise anything. See our full UniFi security camera page for the cameras, recorders, and the Protect app.
