Most homes use one of a handful of common garage door sizes. Sizes are written as width by height in feet.
Common single-car sizes
- 8 x 7 and 8 x 8: a standard narrower single door
- 9 x 7 and 9 x 8: a wider single door, common on newer homes
Common double-car sizes
- 16 x 7 and 16 x 8: the most common two-car doors
- 18 x 7 and 18 x 8: a wider two-car door that gives more room to pull in and out
An 8-foot height gives more clearance for taller vehicles, but the opening and the room above the door have to support it. Commercial doors come in many other sizes, and we measure those on site.
How to measure your garage door opening
- Width: measure the width of the opening from side to side.
- Height: measure from the floor to the top of the opening.
- Headroom: measure from the top of the opening up to the ceiling or the first obstruction. This is the space for the tracks and springs.
- Side room: check the space on each side of the opening.
If you are not sure, no problem. You do not need exact measurements to request a price. Choose your door size in the quote form and add photos of the inside and outside of your door, and we will confirm everything before we order.
